The WaSPP network was officially launched 20-22 January 2025 at the Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Researchers from the collaborating institutes spent three days discussing and planning WaSPP activities prior to pilot implementation of wastewater surveillance for virus families with pandemic potential.

Implementation of wastewater surveillance for virus families at risk of causing the next pandemic could allow risk mitigation and early detection of human transmission. However, we need methods and tools to tackle this challenge and to maximise our chance of success. At the kick-off meeting we focused on our work plans on key topics, including ethics and data reporting, laboratory methods and sampling design. We also shared our experience and planned for activities to train junior scientists in this emerging discipline. A full report from the meeting can be found here.
